An early introduction to the hills and mountains of the United Kingdom first inspired Paul to pick up a camera. As he ventured further afield to the French Alps, Peruvian Andes and Nepalese Himalaya, photography became more important in documenting his travels & expeditions. Originally trained in film processing and exhibition printing, he has increasingly combined his interest in adventure travel, remote landscapes and traditional cultures with photography. In 1989 Paul returned to college for two years to study documentary photography and has since produced work for international editorial, corporate and charitable clients. These include The Sunday Times, San Francisco Examiner (US), Geographical Magazine, Animan (Switzerland), GEO (Germany), Visa International, British Airways, Cable & Wireless Communications, Dorling Kindersley and Survival International. Since becoming a freelance photographer in 1990, Paul has ventured into the Steppes of Mongolia, Tibet and Russia’s Far East; trekked through India’s Northwest & Northeast Frontiers; sailed through the Malay Archipelago and documented cultural identity in Vietnam, Ecuador, Chile, Honduras and Iran. His most recent expedition assignments took him by camel through the Western Sahara and a journey across the Central Asian Republic of Kyrgyzstan. Conservation and the environment have long been close to his heart and three assignments in 2006/7 took him to Fiji and The Philippines for Coral Cay Conservation, South Africa and Kenya for I to I, Tanzania and Peru for Earthwatch. From his base in the Yorkshire Dales, Paul regularly works on features and stories in the UK, which include photography for The National Trust, The Harrogate International Centre, BBC Countryfile magazine and Northumberland Tourism. His portraits of British Explorers are part of the permanent collections of the National Portrait Gallery & The Royal Geographical Society. He was awarded the ‘Cherry Kearton’ medal for photography of “peoples and the natural world” by The Royal Geographical Society of which he is a Fellow. Paul currently leads active photographic tours for Light & Land and conducts seminars in Europe for Travellers' Tales.
